yes, i confess, i went to the sneak peak website immediately. and continued to dream of the lovely pieces that were hinted at in the photos. BUT WAIT!...i told myself. you love vintage, too. i've featured this dress before, and i was astonished to see that it is still on ebay. i absolutely love it. the open, metallic knit. the ribbon straps (and stitching throughout the dress). it's just too beautiful!

drapey goodness

the cut of this dress is super modern. and the details are so elegant. broomstick pleating. wavy hem. beaded fringe. gorgeous.

short and sassy

okay, this would be one SEXY bride. while this dress is super-duper short, the details are so sweet. lace and swiss dots. perfect balance achieved.

elegant minimalism

this dress is all about the texture. you're gonna have to be super slim to pull off the cut, but, WOW, is it stunning.

romance just oozes out of this dress. the silky fabric. the lacy collar. the ribbons. ROMANCE!

charming crochet

a dress that is fully crocheted is just so special. even if this dress wasn't handmade, it took time to make. lots of time. throw a vintage slip under it for a special beach wedding (and a bikini under it for the reception!).

casually colorful

if you want something more cheery than the average neutral color wedding dress, this one fits the bill. i love the ruffle collar and the grosgrain bow belt. this one looks like it came right off the pages of that anthro catalog already!

looking for some warmth

recently, i've posted a couple of warm weather dresses (even though it's the beginning of winter here in brooklyn). i just can't help daydreaming about leaving this cold, windy city and finding a warm spot somewhere to do nothing for a while. decadent, luxurious, wonderful nothing.

so i know it's still illegal for american's to visit cuba, but there's got to be some way around it. once i figure it out, i'm packing all the brightly colored, sheer layered dresses i can into a suitcase and heading to old havana!

two new finds

it has actually been a very long time since i've purchased a dress on ebay. i've been trying to simplify my life and the first thing to get scrutinized was my closet. i got rid of a lot of stuff, but i just couldn't bring myself to get rid of any of my vintage dresses. so, in order to keep my closet manageable and still hold on to my treasures, i stopped buying things on ebay.

however, since starting this blog up again, i've been spending a good amount of my free time perusing ebay to find the best pieces to show you. sometimes i just can't muster enough will power to say no when i chance upon the perfect little something. take these two dresses for example:

the polka dot dress fits me like a dream. it's a thick poly, union-made dress from the 60s and is fully lined (including the two pockets on the front of the dress!). the quality is impeccable and the dress is certainly a head turner...just don't look too long or you'll go cross-eyed. (i only think it a little odd that this is something that makes me like a dress more...)

the teal number is stunning on. it is also a poly fabric, but is much lighter and silkier than the first dress. the empire bust is super flattering and the skirt just gracefully flows all the way down to my ankles. oh, AND IT HAS A HOOD! it makes me feel like a badass-medieval-princess-assassin and it's super fun!

the very best part??? i got both dresses for a total of $50.

now i ask you, how could i resist?

so i think the dress today is going to need a little bit of explaining - or styling rather. before i do that, take a look:

at first glance, it is a fury of color and pattern, and while i'm naturally drawn to that, i understand others aren't. BUT, i believe this dress could happily live and be worn in every woman's wardrobe, with a few considerations. the cut, fabric and condition are fabulous, so it just comes down to being comfortable with the color and print. here's what i think you could do:

wear it under a fitted black blazer with black tights and boots. if it's the only color you're wearing and part of it is covered, this dress will look much less outrageous. (also, that ascot is just begging to be tied in a big bow. it would be adorable poking out above the blazer's collar and you would need to wear a necklace!)
pair it with a high-waisted black (leather, ooooh) pencil skirt. this dress could easily be worn as a top if the skirt is long enough to cover the hem. and again, the less you show of the actual dress, the less crazy it will look.
hike up the hemline. i feel like you can get away with more vivacious color if the dress is shorter. take this dress to a tailor and have a couple of inches chopped off. then wear it as a tunic with jeans or leggings or a cute mini with tights.
wear it under a long, neutral colored sweater coat or fitted crew neck. this is the same idea as the blazer, but the knit would make it look more casual.
or, just wear it as a dress. i think it's pretty fantastic exactly the way it is!

tragically cute, i will admit. but i love that a very versatile, strong look is created with only a handful of pieces. i'm not sure that i could stick to such a stark palette of grey, white, and black but i would definitely be willing to try a tiny suit with a skinny tie.

umbrellas for your feet

oh, how i have longed for the old galoshes i had as a child! whenever it would rain, i wouldn't worry about what shoes i had on because i knew i could shove my be-shoed foot into the nearly shapeless, oversized rubber boot and i could splash in the puddles all day long.

as an adult, i am constantly torn about which shoes to wear on rainy days. heels are dangerous, sneakers get soaked, and suede would be ruined forever. my rain shoe, as long as it is warm enough to wear them, is an old pair of rainbow flip flops (i figure a wet foot is better than a soaked shoe). then when the weather turns cold, it's a rather unattractive pair of duck boots.

UNTIL NOW! check these puppies out.

they are called shuellas. they fit over any shoe, including heels, and keep your feet completely dry during rain storms. i can hardly wait to carry them all over the city in my bag, just knowing that i am completely prepared for the next downpour.

my search on ebay continues. i have become obsessed with all things mod for the fall. mod hair, mod jewelery, mod dresses, mod dresses, mod dresses...(you get the idea, yeah?)

so, i have several new additions to my wardrobe to update you on.

the "perfectly suzy" dress

this dress is me up and down. i love the pattern, i love the colors, i love the cut. the measurements are mine exactly. i can't wait to wear this dress.

the "mod doesn't have to be crazy" dress

in my search for mod dresses, i have found myself drawn to the crazy patterns, the bright colors, and the bold lines. this dress has all the right details to be mod (knot at the neck, 3/4 sleeves, welt pockets, mini length) but is made in a rather understated grey wool. love it.

the "never going to want to take this off" dress

fit and flare, poly dress = super comfy
ambiguous fish scale/bird feather pattern = super fun
poly dress + scale/feather pattern = perfection

the "diamond in the rough" dress

now, we all know that this dress hasn't been photographed well at all and the mannequin is a little creepy, but i have hope in this dress. faith in THIS dress. it will be perfect on me. the fit will be great and the smocked neckline (which you can hardly see in the pictures) will be such a flattering detail. and i love the neon green! it's gonna work out...just you wait.

believe it or not i'm still waiting for a few more dresses to end. i will let you know how they turn out.

i was checking out ebay this morning and came across this dress when it had just a few minutes left on the auction block. i typically put a lot of thought into my purchases, but this was too pretty to let go. (it is made of silk and fully lined in taffeta. i'm a sucker for a well made dress in EXACTLY my size.) i'm not in love with the neckline...at least the way the picture shows it...so i may play with that a bit when i have it in my hands. other than that, i am very pleased.

it may seem like a lot of the vintage dresses on ebay are for smaller women, but depending on your shape, there is a decade out there for everyone. big bust/hips? 40s/50s full skirted dresses. bulgy tummy? late 60s/early 70s tent dresses. pear shape? 70s a-line halters. anything is in style if it looks great on you! (seriously.)

ebay dresses for everyone - part one

i recently had a cookout for my friend's birthday. i wore one of my many maxi sundresses i got from ebay (you know i'm obsessed, right?) and when i told some of my girlfriends that it came from ebay, i got the usual response of shock and admiration. things were said like:

"how does it fit you so well?"
"i can't find anything, ever, on ebay."
"did you get it altered?"
"i can never find things in my size."
"i just get nervous about buying something without seeing it."
etc.

i spoke with one of my girlfriends specifically, and at length, on the subject of buying for a more voluptuous girl on ebay. today, i am here to demystify the art (yeah, i'm proud) of finding the perfect dress on ebay (in part one) and to offer my voluptuous lovely several options i found for her (in part two). so...here we go.

the how-to of ebay dress shopping

know what you like. there are thousands and thousands of dresses on ebay. it can get overwhelming fast. have an idea in mind before you start looking.
use the search bar to your advantage. once you have a dress/shape/color/era/size in mind, search for that. most people are very descriptive in their titles so you won't lose a lot of viable options when searching. (my recent search terms have been "maxi" and "psychedelic", separately.)
know your range of measurements exactly. this is really the most important bit because you aren't going to be able to try on this dress until you own it. you can use this incredibly brief, but instructional guide from vintagevixen.com to help you figure out how to measure yourself correctly. (make sure you have on the same undergarments you would when wearing a certain dress. i have a few sets of measurements depending on whether or not i'm wearing a bra with a dress and even which bra i would choose to wear.)
really look at the details. again, since you aren't going to be able to touch the dress before purchase, make sure the seller's photos give you a good idea of the quality of the fabric and the craftsmanship of the dress. always ask for more photos if you are intrigued but not yet convinced.
read the fine print. most sellers will only let you return a dress if they can agree with you that they described it incorrectly. some people list measurements in a funny way, have rules about paying by a certain method or time period, or may not mention the flaws or overall quality of a dress. once you have found your virtual vintage dream dress it can get expensive if you're bidding against many others who feel the same love and adoration you do. cover your ass and know all the details so when you finally win your dress it will be an amazing investment and not an unreturnable mistake.

that's the basics. once you start doing it more often (honestly, the hunting becomes addictive) you will hone your craft. you will learn exactly what you like and what looks great on your body and will feel damn good with the barrage of compliments that will follow your new vintage dress around town. with the single link below, i open the door to an exciting new world of clothing to you. be bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.

since i don't have cable tv, i rely solely on the internet to provide my entertainment when i want to veg out on the couch at home. i recently discovered the british version of project runway *called project catwalk* and fell in love.

i've read about many project runway fanatics that are disappointed by the show, but give me cute guys with a gorgeous accent and i'll watch almost anything *sad but true*.

the clothes had a decidedly british influence as did the show itself. honestly, it felt more like project catwalk was more about the designers themselves than it was about the clothes they designed. and what kept me in the show was ross...see more cute pictures below.

so...have i mentioned that i work at the greatest company ever!?! *i do.* every new employee at work has to do a black and white photo shoot to get a picture for the website and their business card. the idea behind my photo shoot was that i'm a scavenger/treasure hunter/dumpster diver. i had an amazing time with the photographer...and i think some of the photos turned out really great. *the last picture was a total accident and happened because i was laughing so hard i was embarrassed to show my face.*

my mom came to visit me in brooklyn last week for mother's day. the last time she visited it was her first trip to nyc, so we did the tourist thing...statue of liberty, times square, etc. i couldn't stand another visit like that *who wants to be mistaken for a tourist in their own city?* so we went shopping...as it is our favorite past-time and, honestly, just about the only thing we can agree on.

my mother had me when she was 41. she is now 65 and has lived through so many fashion trends it boggles my mind. her favorite thing to say while we are shopping now is "anything goes." and really, when i look at fashion and street style blogs, i feel that is true.

yarborough jewelry. i found the company randomly while reading my monthly email installment of the JC report and fell madly in love.

the fall/winter 2007 collection is punctuated with great portrait-like photos of poultry...

while the spring/summer 2008 collection is litered with photos of great vintage cars.

the presentation is so much fun...but the actual jewelry is better. i love the diy quality of many of the pieces and find it just as inspirational for future projects as i find myself lusting after the pieces themselves.

the last photo really reminds me of some of the cupcake diary's stuff.

recently, i decided to grow my bangs out...like last night. i've had them for a while, so i have never really thought about the general shape of my eyebrows. also, one of my eyebrows has a weird cowlick in it, but that is neither here nor there.

now i'm thinking about having them waxed, but i want to keep them full. i'm terrified that if i go to my beauty parlor this *below* will happen.

pencil thin mustaches may be adorably retro *maybe not*...but i can't do pencil thin eyebrows.

i found some pictures of eyebrows that i like and they really don't look all that different from mine. just a little more refined.

last night, i went to see the new rolling stones concert movie, shine a light...in imax. i was absolutely overwhelmed the entire time. it is amazing. see it. now. with that being said, i can move on.

we decided it would be a good idea to sneak some booze into the theatre...and it was *it always is!* my friend brandi was searching for some cold champagne in a can that we could drink during the mick jagger/buddy guy duet champagne and reefer. we never found any that was cold, but we picked some up anyway.
i have never heard of Sofia, this wonderous gift from the gods *and francis ford coppola* but it is my new favorite...specifically because i am a sucker for smart design. the precious pink can comes with a flexy straw attached at the side, a la capri sun. it is such a great treat and would be wonderful for picnics...or life in general.

between my new found love of both sofia and charlie watts, i was one happy girl.
